This blue commemorative plaque records: Dame Annie Maud Burnett. b. 1863-1950 d. lived here. Elected in 1910, she was the first and only woman member of Tynemouth Council until 1929 when three others were elected. Created a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1918 for services during World War 1, she became the first woman mayor of Tynemouth in 1928. She was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1920. Dame Maud Burnett was a pioneering local politician, serving as the first woman member of Tynemouth Council in 1910 and the first female mayor of Tynemouth in 1928; she was also recognized for her services during World War I with a DBE in 1918.
