Mauchline Castle stands on Castle Street as a medieval tower house, its stones marking the town since the middle ages. It is the kind of place where people climbed tall ladders, pasted wax on letters and watched the valley for danger. Whether it annoyed neighbours or protected them, it shaped the street because everyone had to pass its shadow.
