This stone commemorative plaque records: This plaque commemorates the landing in Leith of Marie Stuart, Queen of Scots, upon her return from France on 19th August 1561. Placed here by the Marie Stuart Society in the year of the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2002. Recorded plaque organisation: Marie Stuart Society.
Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland was a pivotal figure during the 16th century, known for her complex political alliances and her tragic end; she returned to Scotland in 1561 after spending most of her childhood in France, aiming to rule her kingdom independently but faced numerous challenges including religious conflicts and political intrigues.
