This blue commemorative plaque records: Spread Eagle Hotel. Tradition has it that these are the oldest licensed premises in Scotland. The façade dates from the 18th century, but within there is evidence of a much older building, perhaps a tower which defended the Market Place. Mary Queen of Scots may have lodged at the inn here in 1566 until a fire forced her to find other accommodation. Recorded plaque organisation: Royal Burgh of Jedburgh.
Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567, is historically significant for her tumultuous reign and eventual execution by Elizabeth I of England; tradition suggests she briefly lodged at the Spread Eagle Hotel in Jedburgh in 1566 before a fire displaced her.
