Mary Ann McCracken

Mary Ann McCracken was born in Belfast on 8 July 1770 into a family that built the town's first cotton mill and funded radical ideas. She taught poor children to read without church rituals, provoked local anger, and spent a lifetime opposing slavery in a port that depended on it. Her letters record the age, but her actions changed it.
