This blue commemorative plaque records: Mary Ann Craven 1826-1900 Master Sugar Confectioner established a factory on this site. Later known as Craven’s French Almond Works, it continued here until 1966. Recorded plaque organisation: York Civic Trust.
Mary Ann Craven was a pioneering female entrepreneur who established a successful sugar confectionery business in the 19th century, known for her innovative French almond products. Her factory, Craven’s French Almond Works, became a significant local industry, operating continuously until 1966 and contributing to the economic development of the area.
