This blue commemorative plaque records: Maritime Chambers Built in 1806-7 as a subscription library for Tynemouth Literary and Philosophical Society. Occupied 1895-1980 by Stag Line Ltd., one of Tyneside's oldest family-owned shipping companies. The building still bears the Stag emblem. Recorded plaque organisation: Tyne and Wear County Council, Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside.
Maritime Chambers served initially as a subscription library for the Tynemouth Literary and Philosophical Society, reflecting the area’s intellectual pursuits in the early 19th century; later, it housed Stag Line Ltd., a significant family-owned shipping company that contributed to Tyneside's maritime commerce until 1980.
