This green commemorative plaque records: Pioneer Quay was named by Marie Ashworth from Bury to commemorate the Rochdale Pioneers who founded the Co-operative movement. She chose the name to win the 'Quay with No Name' competition on the Phil Sayer programme BBC Radio Manchester. April 21st 1987 Recorded plaque organisation: Manchester City Council.
Marie Ashworth, a resident of Bury, gained recognition for naming Pioneer Quay in Manchester, honoring the Rochdale Pioneers who were instrumental in establishing the cooperative movement; her suggestion won a radio competition in 1987.
