Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under the middle of the Cork ringfort, a narrow stone chamber waits in darkness. Men planting trees broke through the soil in 1935, revealing walls built upward and a ceiling laid with heavy slabs. The chamber measures twelve feet long, three and a half feet wide and five feet high. It has no entrance, marker or visible trace above ground, suggesting it was hidden deliberately rather than abandoned accidentally.
In centre of ringfort (CO061-152001-). Discovered c. 1935 during tree planting. Investigated later by Hartnett (1939, 227), who recorded a single stone-built chamber '12 feet x 31/2 feet and 5 feet in height'; walls corbelled and roofed with large slabs. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
