Man-made underground passage in Tullanacorra

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

One chamber, one door, one living person. The chamber is a long low room beneath a round hill in Mayo. The door is a flat stone set into the earth. The living person is the woman who carries water into the chamber and returns before dark. The chamber is not a cave. It is a room built by human hands. The door is not a crack. It is a place made for entry. The woman is not a ghost. She is the reason the chamber still exists.
In the interior of a rath (MA071-114----). A linear depression (L 10m N−S; Wth 2.5m; max. D 0.6m) extends from the scarp on the S arc of the rath into the interior to N. A large slab protrudes the base. This may be the remains of a collapsed Man-made underground passage. A second linear depression (L c. 10m NE−SW; Wth 2.5m; D 0.45m) is located a few meters to W; it extends from the rath scarp at the SW through the interior to NE. The two depressions do not intersect.
