What is recorded here
Tooreenbane holds a man-made underground passage inside a ringfort, though nobody now knows the exact spot. Broker recorded an underground chamber there in 1937, suggesting people dug beneath the fort rather than waiting for nature to provide a hole. The chamber may have stored grain, hidden people during storms, or simply tested the patience of everyone who entered it blind.
In ringfort (8605). Broker (1937, 50) recorded an 'underground chamber' here. Exact location not known.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
