Man-made underground passage in Tonroe

The Man-made underground passage was always accessible inside the bank of rath (RO021-042039-) at SW. It consists of a lintelled chamber entered at NE with an air-vent (Wth 0.35m; H 0.26m; L 1.05m) in the back wall which emerges on the bank of the rath. The full extent of the Man-made underground passage was exposed (11E0330) and recorded by Niall Brady, for which see: Excavations.ie (2011:530). It consists of an entrance passage (L 4.8m), a creep (L 1.6m), and a lintelled chamber (L 4.8m; Wth 1.1m; H 1.15m) with an air-vent in the end-wall that emerges on the outer face of the rath bank. Five narrow steps lead down to the floor of the unroofed entrance passage (D 1.6m). See the attached image taken c. 1998 looking towards the creep.
