Man-made underground passage in Scobaun

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Scobaun hides a man-made underground passage inside its ringfort, yet no surface trace remains for modern eyes to follow. The lost tunnel may have served as a refuge, a storage hole or a secret route between houses, but its exact purpose has faded with the soil above it. What is certain is that people dug through living rock or compacted earth, shaped the dark and left it buried. Forgetting did not erase the work; it only removed the entrance from ordinary sight.
Tradition of Man-made underground passage in ringfort (CO151-030001-). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
