Man-made underground passage in Rathrowan

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible chamber exists today because the entrance is blocked. What remains visible is the rath and the marker stone inside it. The underground part is known through local description rather than direct inspection.
Located in a rath (MA071-147----). According to local information, a large stone located roughly in the centre of the rath interior marks the blocked up entrance to a Man-made underground passage. The entrance opens into a narrow passage or creepway, which led to a chamber. The chamber is roughly square in plan and roofed with overlapping slabs, and is large enough to stand up in. Another passage/creepway, which is blocked up, opens off the chamber. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 September 2021
