Man-made underground passage in Pullagh

At the S foot of low cliff (H 4m) at the N end of a narrow terrace (Wth c. 100m) of outcropping rock and rough grazing, at the S end of the Slievecarran Plateau. A well-preserved Man-made underground passage (L 4.5m N–S; av. Wth 1.1m; H 1.3m) built into a low, artificially raised and retained platform (CL006-048002-), incorporating a small fissure or cave in the cliff-face at its N end. It is drystone built with a corbelled upper course supporting large roof lintels. Its S end is rounded, and a displaced capstone here allows access which can also be gained at the opposite N end through the natural cave. The cave (L 2.6m N–S; Wth 1.4m) is almost triangular in profile with side walls that taper to meet almost at a point at roof level. A large limestone block is set at N end of the Man-made underground passage chamber at the point where it meets the cave, acting like a sillstone or step between the cave and Man-made underground passage. Collapsed stone on the floor of the cave obscures the N side of this stone. A cashel (CL006-135001-) and circular hut site (CL006-135002-) lie c. 100m to SSW.
