Man-made underground passage in Knockroe East

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Underneath a road in an area of SE-sloping pasture overlooking the mouth of Bantry Bay. According to local information, the ground collapsed here during road works and an underground passage was revealed. The collapse was subsequently filled in. Recently the road has been re-surfaced and there are now no visible remains of the possible Man-made underground passage at ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
