Knockroe ringfort in County Galway once held a dug underground passage thirty feet long, twelve wide and four deep, large enough for several people to crouch or crawl through together. Rain, time and forgetting have reduced most of that chamber to a small oval muddy hollow in the northeast quadrant, yet the sudden drop and narrow shape still suggest a deliberate room rather than a random pit. Whatever lived or hid there has vanished, leaving only wet earth and the memory of a passage built beneath an ordinary fort.

In a ringfort (GA017-134----). Neary (1914, 115, no. 109) noted the existence of 'a dug out Man-made underground passage 30 ft. long, 12 wide, and 4 ft. deep [9.15m, 3.65m, 1.2m]'. However, all that is now visible is a muddy hollow (L 4m, Wth 2m), oval in plan, in NE quadrant. Up to 0.8m in depth, it runs N-S.
