Johnsfort in County Mayo hid a drystone passage beneath its rath until bulldozers erased the mound in the 1980s. The tunnel stretched fifteen to twenty yards under packed earth, capped by heavy lintels before collapsing into darkness. People walked that quiet depth for reasons no longer written, perhaps fetching water, hiding goods or visiting someone who refused to leave the living world. The rath is gone, but the shape of the hole remains in memory, a narrow throat swallowed by progress.

Located in a rath (MA072-036----), which was levelled in the 1980’s. According to local information, there is a Man-made underground passage in the rath interior: It was described as a passage of drystone walls and lintel roofing, which extended for ‘15-20 yards’ [14-18m] and ended in an area of collapse.
