Gortnahoughtee holds a blocked tunnel beneath a ringfort, said to emerge forty metres east in a field across the road. The passage has vanished from human memory, leaving behind a hollow darkness and a boundary drawn in earth. It may have been a hiding place, a trade route or a forgotten way of moving through the landscape before the land was divided.

In interior of ringfort (CO081-026----). 'There is said to be a tunnel from the interior of the fort which surfaces in a field on the other side of the road (c. 40m to E of ringfort) but it is now blocked off' (Anon 1994, 6). No visible surface trace when ringfort (CO081-026----) was inspected. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
