Man-made underground passage in Gorteen (gallen By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under the western half of a Mayo rath, three dry-stone chambers still wait, joined by creepways narrow enough to force humility. The ground above gives no clue, hiding a place where human hands shaped darkness into a living space. Tradition, not measurement, preserves the shape, but the contradiction is striking: so little remains visible, yet the chambered form is remembered clearly.
In a rath (MA071-004----). According to local tradition, there is a Man-made underground passage in the W half of the rath interior. It is of dry-stone construction and consists of three chambers connected by short creepways. There is no visible trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 24 June 2021
