Man-made underground passage in Gort Na Scairte

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Three tunnels still twist beneath the Gort Na Scairte graveyard, though no one can enter them now. They run under sacred ground and beside the church like a forgotten knot, perhaps made for passage, concealment or prayer. The earth keeps their shape while people debate what they were for.
In graveyard (CO135-085001-) and to SW of church (CO135-085003-). According to local information, "a tunnel running in three directions" was found here. Inaccessible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
