Man-made underground passage in Derryleigh (muskerry West By., Inchigeelagh Par.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Death and darkness may have claimed the lives of those who first crept into that west Cork passage. No modern camera has followed the downward slope, so the chamber beyond remains hidden from human eyes. The earth kept the secret while the ringfort above continued to stand.
In NW quadrant of ringfort (CO081-028001-). Hollow with exposed entrance to creepway which slopes downwards to NW; not explored. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
