Man-made underground passage in Coolanagh

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Ó Ríordáin wrote in 1933 that the cavity at the heart of the Coolanagh ringfort was still being pointed out as the entrance to underground chambers. The green has since swallowed the mark, erasing the exact edge of the hidden passage. The absence does not kill the claim; it removes the easy proof and forces imagination to complete what measurement stopped recording.
Ó Ríordáin (1933, 63) mentions cavity in centre of ringfort (CO095-06802-) which 'is pointed out as the entrance to underground chambers'. No visible trace of cavity in overgrown interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
