Man-made underground passage in Cloghfune

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Cloghfune, County Cork, Ireland: A man-made underground passage may exist beneath a coastal promontory fort, hinted only by a shallow 1.6-metre depression in the southern bank. The sea kept the place company while people forgot the shape of what they buried or built below. That much is record; the rest is imagination.
Shallow depression (diam. 1.6m) inside S bank coastal promontory fort (CO127-001001-) may indicate presence of Man-made underground passage. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
