Man-made underground passage in Cloghane Upper

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Cloghane Upper holds a man-made underground passage marked by a depression exposing a large flat slab on the east side of a ringfort. Probing found a second slab behind the first, while lighter coloured grass still grows above the hidden work. The passage may have served the people who built the ringfort, giving them a concealed route through solid ground.
Depression exposing large, flat slab in E side ringfort (CO127-020001-). Probing detected second slab behind. Lighter coloured grass grows in vicinity. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
