Man-made underground passage in Bengour West

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Bengour West holds a vanished underground passage inside a levelled ringfort. Ó Ríordain wrote it down in 1933, but the earth has taken back the shape and no surface trace remains. Whatever doorway or chamber once stood there has disappeared under grass, soil and time.
Ó Ríordain (1933, 58) records Man-made underground passage in centre of now levelled ringfort (CO095-018---). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
