What is recorded here

Under Rathbeg in Ballymacquin Lower, a man-made passage cut through living rock before the land was taken. The 1842 survey marked a cave inside the ringfort, but the 1916 drawing dropped it and the earth has since been levelled. What was built there has been erased, leaving only the memory of a hole where human hands made darkness.

Rathbeg/Ráth Bheag (small ringfort; KE014-079----) is marked on the 1842 and 1916 OS maps as a large circular enclosure. In the 1842 map, 'cave' (KE014-079001-) is marked in the interior of the site, but it does not appear on the later edition. Today this site has been completely levelled and no surface trace remains.
