Man-made underground passage in Ballyhindon

Gillman (1896, 422), quoting from a letter from Mr Newenham to Crofton Croker, recorded a stone-lined Man-made underground passage on Mr Joyce's farm, in the inner chamber of which was 'a small square aperture as if to admit air'. Also recorded by Windele (1898, 53), who noted that it consisted of 'two bee-hive chambers, formed of stone, and communicating with each other by a creep of about a yard square'. McCarthy (1977, 163, 442) included plan (after Croker). Exact location not known but Windele (ibid.) noted that it was in the second field from the road, near the two-mile stone.
