Mains Castle is a clearance cairn in East Ayrshire, Scotland, meaning it marks a removed building rather than a standing room. That reversal is the point: a castle may have had chambers, hearths and owners, but the land was taken back and the stones scattered into a small mound. The name still sounds grand because memory resists erasure, yet the visible result is humility. A person walking past today would see only a low shape in grass, not a doorway, which is exactly what clearance produced.
