Maiden Castle is the largest Iron Age hillfort in Britain, occupying nineteen hectares of Dorset hilltop where Durotriges people lived from 600 BC until Roman times. Its nested ramparts and ditches grew larger and more complex around 450 BC, turning a modest settlement into a vast fortified landscape that still shadows Dorchester. The earthworks remain sharp enough to walk, inviting you to imagine crowds moving through gaps that once marked ceremony rather than defence.
