This black commemorative plaque records: Volk's Electric Railway, Brighton. The world's oldest electric railway opened on 4 August 1883. Constructed by pioneering electrical engineer Magnus Volk, the line still follows much of the original route. Magnus Volk was a pioneering electrical engineer who constructed the world's oldest electric railway in Brighton, England, which opened on 4 August 1883 and continues to operate along much of its original route today. His work significantly contributed to the early development and public acceptance of electric transportation technology.
