Maesbury Castle

Maesbury Castle is an Iron Age hillfort on the Mendip Hills where a single rampart still stands six metres high above the surrounding limestone. The name combines a Brythonic field with an Old English fort, hinting that people from different worlds once argued over the same grass. It rose during a time when iron replaced bronze and old powers collapsed, perhaps becoming a weapon only when crowded lives turned to open warfare. The Stevens family farms the land now, keeping the ancient boundary alive beneath modern boots.
