Mackworth medieval settlement including the castle gatehouse, part of the medieval open field system and a pinfold

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Mackworth is a scheduled monument preserving a medieval settlement, castle gatehouse, open field system and pinfold in Amber Valley, England. The surviving gatehouse stands as a square, battlemented ruin beside faint traces of courtyards, fields and a pinfold that once regulated animals and household life. It is not a grand castle in the romantic sense, but a domestic medieval place where stone, timber, farmland and restraint shaped everyday existence.
The National Heritage List for England records Mackworth medieval settlement including the castle gatehouse, part of the medieval open field system and a pinfold as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The castle gatehouse at Mackworth was built in the 14th century by the Gresley family, who were prominent landowners in the area. The site is important as it provides insight into medieval rural life and land management in the English Midlands.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
