Muddy water still fills the moat around Lyonshall Castle, where a thick circular keep rises from its wooden mound like the forgotten heart of a drowned hall. Roger de Lacy held the land when Domesday counted its villagers and slaves, while later Devereux and Burley hands argued over its gatehouse and market. John Devereux even contracted a mason to build a broad hall and restore the portcullis before death called the work home. The castle passed through marriage, forfeiture and ruin until the Thynne family inherited little more than rain-worn stone, yet the moat, bridge and buried walls still hold the shape of that proud local house.

The National Heritage List for England records Lyonshall Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Lyonshall Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Montalt family, a prominent noble lineage in Herefordshire. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Welsh Marches and as a well-preserved example of medieval military architecture.
