Luscombe Castle is a Grade I listed park and garden near Dawlish, built between 1800 and 1804 when Charles Hoare replaced an older house with a stone castle designed by John Nash and Humphry Repton. Its odd towers, asymmetric rooms and wide gardens were made to frame valley views rather than follow a strict plan. During the Second World War the estate became an evacuation point, pulling outside children into its grounds. Today the registered site still holds that shape: a private castle made public enough to remember.
