Loxley Edge is a sandstone escarpment formed during the Permian period, approximately 290 to 250 million years ago, through the deposition of aeolian (wind-blown) sands in a desert environment. It is notable as part of the Magnesian Limestone and Millstone Grit geological formations, which are significant in the South Yorkshire landscape for their role in shaping local topography and supporting distinctive upland habitats.
