Louis MacNeice

Birthplace

What is recorded here

Belfast birthplace of Louis MacNeice, youngest son of an Anglican clergyman and a Connemara schoolmistress, where the boy later called Freddie entered the world in 1907 before his family crossed to Carrickfergus. The house may have smelled of church polish, seawater and tea, while a difficult birth and his mother's later collapse turned that beginning into a wound he carried into poetry. MacNeice transformed private loss, belonging and mortality into verse that remained humane, observant and unexpectedly alive.

Why this person is known: Irish poet and playwright (1907–1963)
