Loughlohery Castle

On an E-facing slope in undulating terrain. Loughlohery tower house (TS082-004----) is visible c. 400m to the SW. Scrub and nettles in area of former house. Area scattered with scrap metal. In the Civil Survey (1654-6) there is a reference to 'a house and a garden in the Towne of Loghlochry' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 350, 410), this may refer to this house. On the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map a house is depicted here called 'Loughlohery Castle' with laid-out gardens. The house was demolished c.1980s using dynamite. According to local information the house was built of red-brick and had not been occupied in living memory. A wall and gable of an outbuilding survive, constructed of limestone. There is also an adjacent well which is built of red-brick to a depth of c. 6m, below which is stone. The well is now covered with a concrete slab.
