Lord Stanley of Preston purchased the original Stanley Cup from a silversmith on this site in 1892 for the people of Canada to commemorate amateur and professional ice hockey. The cup is now in the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Lord Stanley of Preston, the 16th Earl of Derby and then-Governor General of Canada, purchased the original Stanley Cup in 1892 to donate to Canada's ice hockey community. The cup became the prestigious championship trophy for professional ice hockey in North America and is now housed in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
