Lochranza Castle stands on a narrow Arran peninsula as a ruined hall-house from the late 1200s or early 1300s, probably built for the MacSween family during border struggles. It had two storeys beneath battlements, with a high door reached by ladder, lodgings above and storage below. A tradition claims Robert the Bruce landed there in 1306 on his return from Ireland. The Montgomeries of Eglinton may have changed it into a tower house in the late 1500s before it fell into disuse in the late 1700s.
