Lochore Castle stood on Inchgall, the Isle of Strangers, where Duncan of Lochore first raised a motte during the reign of Malcolm IV of Scotland. The Valances later extended the site into a four-storey keep with corner towers, forcing visitors to cross open water before they could face its stones. When the loch was drained at the end of the 18th century, the castle lost that boundary and became ordinary land; it was refilled in the 1980s after mining scarred the area, returning the island to its older, stranger shape.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lochore Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Lochore Castle was built in the 14th century by the Lindsay family, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered for its strategic position in Fife and its role in the region's medieval history.
