Lochmaben Old Castle stands as a medieval motte in Dumfries and Galloway, a man-made hill of earth and stone that once carried a fortress now vanished. Men climbed its slope under storm or starlight, perhaps listening for danger or simply watching the valley breathe. The castle itself has left no wall behind, only the shape of the mound and the certainty that it existed.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lochmaben, Old Castle as Motte (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Built by the de Vesci family in the 12th century, Lochmaben Castle was an important stronghold in the Scottish Borders, associated with the suppression of the William Wallace rebellion and later with the English occupation during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
