Loch Gorm Castle was a square stronghold with round corner bastions, built around the 1430s for Clan Donald on Eilean Mòr in Islay. It changed hands violently, was demolished in 1608, repaired, surrendered in 1615, retaken, and still held a private garrison in 1639. Now the island looks featureless from the shoreline, hiding a life of occupation, loss and repeated return beneath green growth.
