What is recorded here
Lissowroe is a red river fairy fort where a collapsed hut still stands inside the earthen ring. The Owroe water touches its eastern edge, completing the defence that human hands began. People may have lived there before the fairies took the house back, but the mound and river suggest the boundary between worlds remains thin.
Internal diam. 25m N-S, 30m E-W
Lissowroe/Lios Abhann Rua: The first edition of the OS map depicts a subcircular bivallate enclosure on the W bank of the Owroe river, which forms part of its defences at E. The site is more consistent today with what is depicted on the second edition of the map - a univallate enclosure bounded at E by a field boundary with the river some 30m to E. The overgrown earthen bank is 1.3m high externally and measures .95m high internally. It has a basal width of 4.8m. A portion of the level interior of the rath is occupied by a large overgrown stony mound, measuring 13m in overall diameter. Though no facing is visible, it may represent the collapsed remnants of a large hut (KE081-013001-).
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 528. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
