Lisheen is a cemetery hidden inside an old ringfort at Killeen, County Mayo, where a square children's burial ground occupies the eastern end of the circular enclosure. The fort bank still stands nearly two metres high in places, ringed by blackthorn, bramble and ash, while the burial part has disappeared beneath the same growth. That is what makes the place striking: an old stronghold has also become a quiet ground for children the church would not receive, so strength and grief share one small circle of earth.
