Lindisfarne Priory was founded in the 7th century by Saint Aidan, with the pre-Conquest monastery later developed by the Hilda and the Northumbrian church; it became a Benedictine cell after the Norman Conquest. The site is of major historical and religious significance as the center of early English Christianity and the location of the creation of the Lindisfarne Gospels.
