Mud, marble, memory: Liddel Strength is a borderland castle where an old earthwork and a later stone tower still face the River Liddel valley. It belongs to the medieval Anglo-Scottish frontier, the kind of place where danger was ordinary and watchfulness was a habit of life. The land may have felt exposed, uncertain and alive, but the castle gave that uncertainty a shape: a ridge, a room, a light, a warning.
The National Heritage List for England records Liddel Strength motte and bailey castle and fortified tower house as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Liddel Strength motte and bailey castle and fortified tower house was built by the de Vesci family in the late 12th or early 13th century, likely to control the strategic border region between England and Scotland. It is important as a well-preserved example of medieval frontier defense architecture in the Anglo-Scottish Marches.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
