Leybourne Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Leybourne family, a prominent baronial family in medieval Kent. It is remembered as an important example of a motte-and-bailey castle and as the site of the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket's brother in 1170, linking it to significant events in English history.
