No known castle stood at that point when a hand wrapped cut silver rings in cloth and pressed them into a drinking horn. The owner may have been a trader, a soldier or a fugitive, but the act was deliberately local: hide valuable things where roots and soil could keep them from ordinary sight. Lews Castle Hoard still belongs to that hidden moment, not to the building later raised above it.
