Marybank Lodge still stands beside Lews Castle in Stornoway, a small 19th-century gate house built to mark the entrance and keep the estate orderly. It may have employed a keeper, hosted visitors or simply watched carts pass, but its real function was to divide outside world from castle grounds. That boundary is the interesting part: a modest building used to decide who belonged inside.
